                                                                       What Is 'Sport'

There are many different definitions of what constitutes a sport, each one trying to define the type of it. Basically, there are three types of sports: physical activity, sport and recreation. Physical activities can be a form of entertainment such as running or swimming; an individual's choice to take part in an organised sporting activity like soccer or cricket; and participation in group activity which can be either amateur or professional. For example, football was developed originally to stimulate athletes to compete at local grounds; Rugby was created with the intention of promoting domestic interest rather than national competition; and Cricket was designed for the enjoyment of players as well as spectators.

The National Society Sports defines game to be "any activity involving physical movement in which an active player or team competes against another player, team, competition or event." The British Association of Active Principals recommends that a play-by-post approach be adopted. Players compete according to the rules set by their coaches, with points awarded for each successful pass or hit. It also suggests that the scores should be kept within a set amount; a total score being determined after every end of session. It also states that players that have committed fouls or missed other penalty areas will receive extra points from those who win the toss and take on the opposition. However, the BAP also recognises that some games do not follow these guidelines making them categorised as ‘informal’, ‘amateur’ or ‘pro’. Professional game can involve playing on the professional training grounds, but is only available to professionals. This means that all professional sport must follow these guidelines, as stated by the RIAA.

Rehabilitation Sport has become increasingly popular over recent years. Rehabilitation Sport’s aim is to enhance performance levels and improve quality of life by restoring lost ability to participate in vigorous exercise and return to full function at home, where possible. Rehabilitation Exercise is an intense, systematic, patient-centred method of rehabilitating athletes and patients. It comprises functional and cardiovascular conditioning, dynamic stretching, muscle strengthening, mobility, balance and flexibility assessments, functional training and cognitive behavioural therapy. Rehabilitation is used not only for people with impairments, but for individuals with disorders relating to memory, attention or personality problems, chronic pain, stroke, Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety and eating disorder.

The definition of disability varies between countries and nations, leading into differences in care provision. There is no standard definition of disabilities used in disability management. In general, disability management is concerned with understanding the complex nature of persons with disabilities, their needs, abilities, capabilities, interests, aspirations, behaviours, rights and opportunities. These elements are then used together to develop strategies, policies and practices to meet these needs.

Sport may sometimes be referred to as physical activity; or any form of exercise that involves physical exertion, either aerobic or resistance. Most often, however, it refers to physical activity in competitive sporting activities, although some games include a variety of athletic and non-aerobic types of exercise competition.

Physical Activity

In the simplest terms, fitness is defined as the state of good health and being physically able to carry out normal daily activities. A person, therefore, has fitness if he/she could undertake regular exercises, even at high intensity, or had previously suffered from chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart failure, kidney problems or cancer and had difficulty completing any physical task despite having been trained at school or college.

Sport

A sport is a formal competition between two or more human beings in which one person carries the other. A man cannot claim to be fit, nor does a woman. To quote Dr George Chemeris (1916–2002), author of Fitness: Why We Do It and How to Live Better (1986): "In sports, we find a way of expressing ourselves, participating in activities with people who want us to succeed in life." When a person enters a game, it becomes a competition and the winner will be the best player based on his skill, strength, technique, tactics, conditioning, mental skill and endurance.

The term sport is usually used in reference to physical activity but this can vary depending upon the level of competition. Different kinds of sport exist, ranging from low level competitions, such as football/soccer, to highly competitive international events, such as Premier League football. Although most top class clubs follow certain standards of excellence, there are some that fail to adhere to strict guidelines to ensure safety and peace. These include rugby, cricket, American football, boxing, motorsport, golf, ice hockey, rugby league and motor racing.
